Batman (1989) Batman Returns first premiered in 1992 as the sequel to Tim Burton’s 1989 release of Batman. We’ll see Michael Keaton return as the Dark Knight, Gotham City’s night guard, as he takes on the evil Penguin, played by Danny DeVito, in Tim’s Michael Keaton version of Batman. Burton was the first release under Warner Bros. The studio then replaced director Tim Burton with Joel Shaumacer and cast Val Kilmer as Batman in Batman Forever (1995). That replaced the actor with George Clooney, who took over the role of Batman in Batman and Robin (1997), which was also directed by Joel Shaumacer. Back at Batman Returns, director Tim Burton originally did not want to direct this sequel. Because he wasn’t too happy with his work in the first Batman (1989), but because of the writing ability of Daniel Waters impressed and convinced Tim Burton to change his mind and decide to direct this sequel.
