Spielberg’s film was intended to capture the blood and horrors of war and was an admirable success in THE LONGEST DAY, shot in semi-documentary format. Zanuck’s intention was to demonstrate the immense effort involved on the part of the Alliance in successful cross-channel penetration. In this regard, the film was also an admirable success. It should be regarded as a history lesson rather than just amazing entertainment. The historical value of the film outweighs the meager theatrical rights Zanuck bestows.
